  • Seems as though my engine is done....

....and I know the 331 or 347 topic has been beat to death with a blunt object and I know this can turn into a lengthy discussion, so I'm not asking which stroker you guys think is best, better, or makes more power, but would rather like to hear opinions from those whom have chosen to go with one or the other, why you chose what you did, and if any regrets NOT choosing the other.

the engine in my coupe is a DSS built 306, and at a young age it started showing slight signs of blow-by but I didn't pay it much mind because I had always heard that it was common in performance engines. I've always heard and read that the 347's are notorious for this due to the pin being in the ring land. The blow-by in my engine worsened as the years went by so needless to say, it has left a bad taste in my mouth.

I think I've decided to go with a FordStrokers.com short block, but I'm still undecided as to what CID. I'm not looking for gobs of power since the car is 100% street(aggressively) driven. 400 to the wheel would be nice. I already have AFR 185's, Systemax intake, longtubes, and all the usual bolt on's. if I have to give up a little horsepower for more grunt down low, that's ok. I need this to be enjoyable along with great drivability and longevity.

I know that there will be a few of you just say to get a stock FOX or build another 306, but I'm looking for more performance. Aren't we all?

So with that being said, discuss.

I did a lot of researck on this recently for my winter build. I have seen no problems with the 347s as long as you use good parts. There is still no replacement for displacement. After it was all said and done I bought a blower as I was more concearned with the strength of the block. I had already split one on meager power and figured if it happens again at least I will still have my blower for the next one. But I think you would regret not going for more cubic inches.

how much power are you looking at making later on down the road? You say 400 now, but we all know how that goes. If thats all your looking for i'd say this would get you done with a custom cam, your afr 185's and maybe a vic jr setup for efi. Only reason I say a different intake is to pull the motor a few rpm's higher. Try the systemax though first. I dont know off hand what kind of rpms they will pull too. A good set of long tubes and you should be knocking on 400rwhp.

I'm only a stop light to stop light kind of guy so I'm sure 400 will keep me happy for a long time. Like mentioned before, I'm more concerned with drivability and longevity.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.

build your own/have it built at a reputable local shop...

DO NOT BUY engines from mail order catalogs IMO

I figured someone would say this. IMO, someone has had a bad experience with every local shop out there so in reality, we're all taking a chance everytime we have something built.

difference is, with a local shop, you can walk in and talk face-to-face with them.

FWIW, Houston Engine & Balance dyno runs every engine they build to ensure no problems/leaks/etc.

This is so true! I try & do all my own work on my vehicles now that im self employed, I figure the time I spend working on my cars is money saved I would be paying a shop who A. Fuck it up all together! B. Tell me one price & then when I go to pick it up Juice the price up.

Im sick of shops doing that kind of shit.

Also I would do a strong 306 Short Block & do a Vortech SC! Nothing like a cam & a SC howling from the hood!

I've thought long and hard about going this route also. It would be cheaper I'm sure.
