  • First Mustang. I have power goals and need advice.

I have purchased an 88 rolling chassis (has an 89 wiring harness and computer), with a stock t-5 and no motor...and although I have turned wrenches on my old 99 dodge dakota (318..mostly bolts ons and got it into the low 12's), I dont know much about internals and mustangs are a little new to me.

I have a friend who does custom interior work for old hot rods..so the interior I can handle (i want it "restored" stock anyway..I like the look and feel of factory fox bodies, no leather..no add ons).

My starting point is a 2000 explorer motor..intake to oil pan...that had 140k miles on it and still ran when it was pulled from a wreck 2 years ago. I know it has gt40p heads and intake, but I am trying to get my hands on a set of used AFR 165 heads from a friend for around $700.

    My goal:

    1. This is a weekend car, not a daily driver...however I want to feel safe enough to hop in, turn on the a/c or heater, and hit the interstate for a 2 hour trip to a car show with some buddies. I want the sound and feel of a 10 second car without the loss of urability.

    2. My goal is low 12's...maybe scratching 11.99 with slicks and a good driver. I am figuring I need roughly 380 RWHP to get to that goal.

My budget is not the greatest, but my initial thoughts on reaching my HP goal the easiest would be a 331 stroker kit...a cast kit is around $800 I think. the AFR 165 heads. I am not sure about this intake, it is supposedly same as cobra, but will it be enough? An then obviously cold air, pulleys, headers, etc.

    Long tubes or shorties?

I am assuming I should get a custom omp cam or something..I hear bad stuff about the alphabet cams?

If I was to throw a vortech on top of that build, would that cast stroker kit hold up...or am I asking for trouble?

I am most concerned with hitting my HP goal while keeping great throttle response, and not revving beyond 6k...I want it a very fun to rive street car, not a high revving peaky track car.

Thoughts? Am I stupid to go for AFR instead of the gt40p's considering I need to keep the motor cost under 3k? Should I avoid the stroker and rebuild with 302 parts to save money and still hit my goal?(and that is considering I need a bunch of stuff to convert the explorer motor to fit I have heard..plus I have no radiator, and stuff.)

Thanks for any help...I dont even have a running car yet but I am exciting to be a "mustang owner" so far.

So I am getting some answers all over the place lol. Turbo is not an option...the kits seem expensive, lot of upkeep, and it looks like I would lose A/C.

My main thing is whether I NEED the 331 kit orbnot with this combo?

And whether a cheap 331 or stock bottom end would hold a vortech down the road if I added it.

Really? Most of my reading states about 3300 pounds...which would need around 425 flywheel horse for 11.99 I thought?

I would rather burn my car to the ground than put anything Chevy on it.

By "those" heads I assume you mean the AFR 165?

Custom grind cam or e-f cam?

At what point would AFR 165 not be big enough...adding a blower on top of that build? 450+ HP? I would rather have heads slightly too small than too big, as I have heard that is better for velocity and throttle response.

Unless you're a Chevy hater an LS swap is great advice, actually. Bang for the buck and responding to mods it's hard to beat.

Okay..let me go back then. I'm sure the ls1 mod is nice, from the sound of it, however I want 100% pure Ford power.

Just out of curiosity...aren't ls1 motors like really expensive? especially doing a swap? How could that possibly get me 400 RWHP cheaper than a pushrod motor using used parts?

Anyway..getting off topic...really hoping for some people with this combo who can chime in..anybody?

I have a 331 Stroker, a SVO block with AFR 165 Heads, Long tubers, Lightning MAF, and a nasty cam. I have all the specs if you want them. I am pumping out 389 RWHP, and 388 lb ft of torque. No turbos, no superchargers. I road race and this thing has held up for over 4 years.

Let me know if you want the specs and I will share.
