  • Fan clutch replacement

It appears my 94 Blazer K1500 fan clutch is shot. When engine is cold, the fan spins pretty effortlessly by hand. My question is how to change out the clutch. What is required, both tool and equipment wise. THanks!

If it's a thermostatic fan clutch it should spin more freely when it cold. You need to check it when it's warm. Unless it has any movement other than spinning, just wiggle it, your fan clutch may not be shot.

If it's like my 93, it comes out easy. No special tools. Remove the top of the fan shroud, it's a two piece, remove the 4 clutch to water pump bolts, pull the fan clutch assembly, then remove the fan from the clutch.

Ok ill give it a whirl once its warm. I noticed it become hot yesterday while waiting in some long traffic with the AC blaring. It normally sits pretty cool (mid mark is 210* Im sitting around 160-180*). While sitting there I observed the temp guage hit 220-230* (red is like 260*?) but when I killed the AC and starte driving (no more then 40 mph) that temp guage went back down damn quick. Its only done that once.

It appears (via the lovely internet) that Ill need some special tool to remove the fan clutch.

Kiss my ass Scotty! Oh, and it overheated today... Drove to flower mound from Keller today and stopped by my wife's parents house to say hi. As I sat there and idled with ac on, it started spewing coolant. Turned it off, waited 10 min, and then drove to my parents house with no ac. It ran cool to parents house.. Soo, it looks like my truck don't like ac and hates to idle longer then 3 min...

You might want to go pop the hood on that blazer of yours and take a look. It's a good idea to chance the water pump while you are in there too.

My temp gauge reads 100 then middle is 210 and red zone is 260. It usually run around 180 degrees (1/4 of the gauge). Now when ac blows and I'm not moving, it runs up to 3/4 of gauge. When ac is off it runs fine all day long. Is water pump necessary?
