  • Power Steering Hose - Please Help!

I just bought a 4Runner for my Dad, and he'll be driving it back up to PA. I'm trying to get it road ready and fix a power steering leak.

There is an 8" section of 3/8" ID hose that's bad, it's dried and cracking. I figured it would be a simple fix but I went to both O'Reilly & AZ and neither had PS hose.

This is on the return line of the system so the pressure isn't too high... the hose was installed from the factory with just the squeeze type hose clamps, which I think contributed to the leak too.

Anyway I went to Lowe's and got some spray hose rated at 300 psi. I'm pretty sure that's more than enough, my concern is will it hold up to power steering fluid? I can tell you it seems like a much stronger hose, I just don't want the rubber to break down. Here is what the hose looks like:

Am I wasting my time putting this on, or will it hold up? I don't want to do it if so. And I really don't want to leave my Dad stranded somwhere between here and PA.

And where can I buy power steering or hydraulic hoses by the foot locally?

Thanks for any input, trying to get this fixed by the end of the weekend.

It will be just fine. It's a little overkill but you can rest easy while the are on the road.

The napa by me builds any hose you need. They did my hoses on my Jeep with the 302 conversion and they used tractor hydraulic line rated at some rediculous PSI. Is he leaving soon?
      Whos your Daddy?

Yes, Thursday. I know that's a lot of time, but I've got a ton of shit going on and really need to wrap this up tomorrow. Tonight hopefully.

I'm not worried about the pressure, more the chemical exposure.

If this one won't cut it, I'll call Napa tomorrow. Thanks!

The PS return hose is usually trans and PS rubber hose.
A trick I learned is fill the system and DON'T start the engine !!
Jack up the front and turned the steering wheel all the way back and forth several times to get the air out of it, fill it the rest of the way,
Slam it on the ground and kickem to da curb.

So the hose I bought at Lowe's should be fine?

Oh duhhh yeah the return line has hardly any PSI. You would be better off using like tranny line. I would be afraid it would melt and collapse that shit.

It looks like it is teflon inner liner, if so a clamp won't hold it.
Go back to AZ or Oreally? And get a piece of trans line and to screw clamps. And your set.
OH and don't use trans fluid !
                Use PS fluid.

AZ are idiots. I found the part number on their website and called them back, the computer said they had it but they couldn't find it in the store. That's the same thing that O'Reily said.

Once I had the part number I was able to find it at another AZ. All this shit for a $2 hose.

Oh, and the young dude working at O'Reily had to ask me how to spell rotor after he tried looking them up in the system three times unsuccessfully. Seriously.

I liked it when you could get on their computers and look stuff up.
But now they don't let ya do it anymore.
