  • 96 5.0 AWD Explorer Build : Project Tornado Exploder

I bought a 96 5.0 Black AWD Exploder last week for 500 bucks. 230k miles and this thing looks almost brand new. Only real problem is a torn up Drivers seat. Transmission was just rebuilt, motor was went through about 20k miles ago. A/C and even the sunroof works! I intend on using it as my next Tornado Chase Vehicle.

So here's the idea. I'm going to put on 2" shackles, TT's and a 2" body lift. Newer explorer rims and 32" BFG AT's. I'm going to Port the stock heads and intake and install an E cam. Herculiner the whole truck. I would love other input and ideas. I'll post pics tonight of the truck as she sits now.

how close are you getting when you chase? i wouldn't think a lifted explorer on small tires would be very stable...

Not that close. haha It's no TIV. I usually see some hail and high winds and sometimes a little debris but I'm still ways away.

Remove your exhaust and run it off the headers to right behind the front tire.

This is the look I'm going for as far as the lift is concerned. Ghetto taillights not included.

I would worry about having all those windows while chasing a tornado. Debris through the windows would be my main concern.

I'm never that close to have something that big going through the air. Only thing I had bust a windshield was big hail. Not saying it couldn't happen but I try to be relatively safe when doing this. It's mainly for taking photos. I'm going to start a portfolio of models in extreme weather.

FWIW this was my old 2WD stock suspension with 31's so the one in the pic may have larger tires than some 32's

AWD, as in like an STI (Dynamic distribution of power...etc...etc) or something or 4WD, where you have to lock in the hubs and/or engage it as needed?

Just curious on that. Did not know the Explorers had an AWD option, pretty neat if so.

Edit: Also, not saying those names are exclusive, just how I've always understood them to be different.
