  • Electronics question: Specific type of wire / connector

In reference to my other threads about electronic stuff, now I'm looking for a specific kind of wire - but not sure what it's "called" or it's spec name.

The stuff I'm looking for is not necessarily copper, and it's 16-3. From what I recall it's usually in a grey colored shield or sleeve.

This is for my CNC and needs to be fairly durable to contaminants. Also, if there's pre-made stuff with XLR type connectors, that would be pimp too, but me making them custom length would probably be best. I'll need ~75' or so.

    Ideas?

( EDIT - it's going to be used for this project: http://www.dfwmustangs.net/forums/showthread.php?t=8539 )

So are you looking for 16ga, 3 conductor shielded cable? (gray outer sheathing, copper conductor, with stainless steel braided shielding under the gray outer sheath?)

If this is right, how much do you need? I might have some extra laying around.

Close, and it would probably work.

The stuff I last got a good look at was a full silver conductor, may have been coated copper - not sure.

The braiding is an added bonus, but not totally necessary I don't think.

I could used 75' or more.

Are you using this with stepper motors, servo motors, or other esd sensitive equipment?

Just to help me understand what you are looking for, is this the type of connector you have in mind?

the best conductor would be copper. Aluminum may have been what you saw before, but it becomes brittle with age & becomes a fire hazard. In fact I believe it has become illeagal to use it when wiring structures due to the fire hazards.

The steel braid shielding is to be grounded in order to keep EMF from effecting sensitive circuitry. Sometimes it is just a foil, but I prefer the steel braid for what I do.

Yeah, that connector you have listed above is what I'd most likely use. The otehr side will be mounted to the panel of the box.

The wire I saw before was not definitely not aluminum, but the more I think about it - it was probably some sort of coated copper.

Also, I think the wire above would work. Oh, and yeah - the wiring/connectors is for Servo motors.

I had one other idea -

power supply cables from computers, like this - http://cgi.ebay.com/COMPUTER-EXTENSI...item4aa5abc3d7

They are usually HEAVY, and the panel connector side would be easy to come by and can be had in 20' lengths like the one shown above. Also, they're usually rated at 15A or 20A (I think).

                thoughts?
