-side note- I did fail inspection Wednesday during the low speed sniffer on the HC (standard = 137, i failed by 4 points.) and high speed I barely passed. It showed standard HC to be 141 I had 139. I went to Phil's and had a new cat put on. My old (original Phil says) was completely hollow! Kinda nice to know my truck BARELY failed with basically straight exhaust. With the Magnaflow cat, the low speed HC was 9, and high speed HC was 3! Lol I got a 350ci prius. Anyhow, it seems to be a good tight engine with plenty of life left. I just have this nit picky BS to fix.
They are pretty expensive for what they are. A lot of people are making block off plates for the EGR Valve and getting a chip burned to delete the code. It will cost more but less headache in the long run. I will be doing that in about a month when I finish the top end on my Silverado but I don't have to worry about emissions BS like y'all do.

Yeah the EGR is likely the culprit for this problem on my 87 silverado. And yeah, aren't they like 80 bucks? I'm thinking toss the old piece of shit TBI motor, and slap a low mileage junkyard 5.3L out of like an '09 model or something. With a few upgrades added to the 5.3, its probly an awesome replacement for the shitty wore out TBI. If you are looking for reliability, half decent power, and fuel economy that is.

I can't say anything bad about the TBI engine since I have had four of them. They are usually cheap to fix when they do break down and reliable as hell. Just not as powerful as the newer V8s but they do get reasonable gas mileage and simple to work on. I can not argue with you on putting a 5.3L in your 87. I will be doing the same to my 95 Sierra since it will only be driving two weeks out of the month and more of a hot rod since I am going carb with a nice cam and stall. My wife drives the 93 so I will have to keep it simple and reliable for her. Good luck on putting the 5.3 in it. Are you going to use the stock 700r4 or going with the newer 4L60?

What is all involved in putting a 5.3?

You're going to have to do lots of reading if you are really serious about it. I will be doing carb on mine at first and then do FI later on. Here is some sites for you to read up on.

A good write up on doing the swap.

Coolant temp sensor next to the thermostat housing.
Its sending a false temp to the computer.
                        About $20.00 bucks !!!!!

if the coolant temp sensor malfunctions, which the do usually from being bumped or hit which breaks them, they will default to -40F so the truck runs super rich.

Yeah, my S10 always passed easily without cats. The last time I got my '90 GMC (TBI 350) inspected, it passed the low-speed NOx by less than 1%.

go to napa and get a TBI over haul kit (bout $20bux) oreillys wants like $50 for the same kit, also be ready to put a new fuel pressure regulator spring in it, they break ALOT. the overhaul will take about 30min and I have done probly 20 of them and they make a world of difference. plus check your Idle air control valve, they are a stepper motor type and there is a reset proceedure for them.
