  • Bluish purple smoke?

I recently acquired a 1995 mustang GT with fairly low miles that someone has not been driving. The car has been sitting for about 3 years due to the previous owner not having the inclination to fix it. The car is in good shape and starts and will run, but its kinda choppy and wouldn't really go down the road very well. There is some blue-ish smoke coming out the tailpipe that almost has a bit of a purple tint to it. And you can smell that the car is running rich. Well, you can smell something, that's for sure. I can't be sure if its actually rich, cause to me the smell doesn't smell like gasoline.

The previous owner said that he ran the codes and that it said something about the O2 sensors. So he bought the O2 sensors, and never even installed them. They're sitting in the passenger seat, still new. I just thought I'd stop by and ask you guys if there is anything that you think might be going on, even though I have a small lead as to what the problem might be. I don't have much experience with different colored exhaust and funny smells so I thought I'd better ask.

Oh sorry I should have mentioned something about that. No, the gas is new. He drained the tank and put a little bit of new gas in it when he decided to get rid of it. He said it had the exact same problem when he stopped driving it 3 years ago. So I'd have to say that its not related to the gas itself.

I mean the car drives, sort of. The whole time its choppy and feels like its cutting out. Then there is that slightly colored smoke and smell. Other than that, everything seems to be in good order.

I don't know much about fuel regulator's, I'm afraid. Where would that be on a fuel injected car? I always thought that all there was, was an electric fuel pump and then the fuel injectors. Guess I was wrong.

I previously bought a car same way, car sat most of the time and then about a couple months after we started driving it, it started doing the same, some mornings car will smoke bluish smoke for a few seconds then quits and when on highway i was told you can smell the oil coming from the exhaust.
My check engine came on and changed o2 sensor and that fixed that.

More likely think its valve seals that have brittled due to not being used so i would presume you might be having same issue?

But then again im no mechanic. Im going to try some of the zmax in the engine oil before i crack into to it. Car runs perfect but like stated once everyother week will smoke a little.

valve stem seals or rings...valve stem seals usually do it while sitting and on start ups where rings are consistent. also check the pcv too

pull plugs....you should be able to tell which cylinder is the problem, was the car a nitrous baby before you got it?
