  • 06 F250 head gasket

got the opportunity to pick up a nice 06 F250 for a hell of a deal. The catch is something in the engine is going on but I'm not sure and can't get a chance to see it before I commit. The dealer told him it needed a new engine but he's still driving it and its smoking and losing antifreeze. First question is whats the chance of the ford house misdiagnosing? I would hope for an EGR or something easy but I'm sure they did a compression test? Second of all, if its a head gasket or something similar am I looking at a ton of $$ or just a lot of work and time?

Its got 120k on it but a diesel seems like it should run longer than that. Just curious if I should get into it or not. The dealer quoted 12k for a new engine and all

If hes still driving it, thats retarded... It could be an egr cooler, it could be head gaskets...if its head gaskets, be ready to pay to have the cab pulled. if its been overheated it could need heads too...its not cheap...pm me if you have a question..oh, and a compression test will not reveal a hg on a 6.0, nor in most cases of anything

If I bought it I would have to fix it myself as I don't have the extra funds so thats why I was asking. I'm decent and replacing stuff as long as I have some kind of instructions to follow.

He just had it tested today and drove it home, he plans to buy a new truck tomorrow and park this one so he's not driving it daily or for fun or anything like that. I just wondered how bad I'm gambling on buying this without getting to see it first. Its an 06 with 120k miles. King Ranch edition, 4dr etc etc. for 5k so its definitely a good deal but I have to commit tonight or in the morning. I thought about having my neighbor pull the dipstick and check it out but I don't know if that will tell me anything either.

any easy stuff I can have a friend look for? I just have a hard time believe the ford house would misdiagnose it. I'm sure they see a lot of EGR issues and would have looked for that first?

        parts are expensive period...for reference...

oil cooler-common to become restricted, 330.00
head gaskets with tty bolts-250 each
        egr cooler-400.00
head--not positive, but i think around 700 ea
arp head studs if you go that route, about 500

take in mind, its a 20 plus hr book time to do head gaskets and i hope you have means to pull the cab...

is it pushing coolant out the reservoir? overheating?

I don't have any details, thats my problem. I'm out of town for work and don't have a way to look at the truck before he sells it. He is giving me first dibs but I don't get to see it since I won't be back in town til Thursday.

my neighbor told me it was smoking white smoke and losing antifreeze. said it seemed to run fine still. thats all the info I have and its VERY unclear as he didn't really take a good look at it just said he thought of me since he knows I work on stuff all the time. I think I have the means to do the cab if it came to that but since I haven't done it before I'm sure it would still be a chore.

It sucks trying to make a decision without enough details. the 5k price seems good and I just can't imagine it being bad enough to need a whole new engine but thats what he was told. Thanks for the info on the parts, best case I guess it would be the EGR but I feel like the dealer would have caught it if thats all it was...I didn't even get a chance to find out which dealership he took it to. I'll try to get a little more details in the morning but just trying to get a feel of if its a good deal or not. sounds like I might should back off of it. I thought I could probably sell it for 5k if I didn't want it but a little scared of it

thanks! I would def. do the EGR delete if I get it, just still on the fence. They're starting my shop tomorrow and thats where all my cash is going right now (althought I'll have a place to fix it then) so I'd have to scrape up this money to get it but I've always wanted a 3/4 ton and this is my chance. If I did fix it I think its a decent investment to sell even if I can't keep it. would you pay 5k for a truck in this condition with as little info as i have?

My father in laws 06 would do the same thing. Don't get it. It is the head gasket for sure. And if he is still driving it then there will be more damage. And they will have or u will have to pull the cab off just to change it. Not worth it keep looking. Let some other person with deep pockets buy that junk.

Back when those were new, I don't think I ever passed by our local dealer without seeing 2 or 3 with the cabs in the air for head gaskets.

If you decide to get it, see if Greenbullitt can hook you up with all the parts for a 7.3L swap...

Wish I could, but I don't think I would be able to afford it. My main point in being able to do this would be so I could finally get the truck I've always wanted without having the cash! I've been looking around and finding a lot of threads like this one:

                    http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/6-0...d-install.html

Looks like it can be done without removal of the cab but just tough? If I knew for a fact it was just a head gasket and EGR I'd probably do it but my main concern is the ford house said the engine needed to be replaced. I can't imagine it being that bad but they should know what they are talking about....

It can be that bad trust me. My father in laws truck the first time this happened did need a new motor. The second third fourth and firth last time the he filed lemon law. Every time was head gaskets. The first time was a whole new motor do to it drained all the coolant and he didn't know it and drove it. I would seriously look for something else. The 6.0 is junk no torque or power what so ever. Save your money and buy a truck with the 7.3. The cab off just makes it way easier. I have seen them do this and was like wow a brand new truck in the shop for a new motor after it's First travel trailer pull. Unless you got the money to keep fixing it don't do it. I speak from experience. Just giving my two cents good luck if u do buy it. U just better hope he has never ran it dry or anything.

thanks....I'll probably call him tomorrow with more questions. he is the original owner and I know he took good care of it, not that that helps. Its never had one problem but everything I'm reading says the EGR problem comes out of nowhere. I will see if I can get more info on it but I am definitely being careful. Wouldn't someone buy a 06 F250 needing a head gasket for 5k though? I just figured if I decided I was in to deep I could probably get my money back. I don't know that but it looks like they are going for 20k+ in good shape so figured it wasn't too bad of a asking price

For $5k..Id sure as hell buy it. You can part that damn thing out if it doesnt work out well. Those seats alone can pull $5k if they are in good shape.

Id plan on redoing the headgasket no matter what. While you are in there, EGR delete, studs, etc...

                            Exactly.

I looked at the link you posted and the job doesn't look too bad as long as you aren't in a hurry. $5k for the truck and another couple of $k in parts is a low price to have a nicely running diesel pickup.

I guess y'all have deeper pockets to waste your time and money on a junk 6.0. Pos never should have been place in fords.
