  • School me on manual transmissions

Our t5 is grinding 2nd and 4th so im guessing not much more life left, it has a new clutch so im blaming tranny, if i shift it slowly i can get 2nd not to grind but there is no hope for 4th

    Car is your typical 85coupe
    Gtp heads
    Carb 650
    Tfs1
    Long tubes
    3.73's

What is the best tranny to get or replace?
The car will be more of a weekend warrior but mostly just beat on, on a regular daily basis

3550 is an easy swap and a bit more reliable

Get a faceplated tko 600 and forget about ever replacing another 5-speed.

TKO or the Gt4 is a little much for the above combo.

3650, they're nice and from what I've seen pretty strong. You'll need a few swap parts but it'll be worth it.

That or rebuild that t5 or swap it out with one from the source, that's what I did.

3650 only fits the 4.6 Mod engine.

Does he want room to grow? Any power adders in the future?

I just finished a T5 yesterday built with the Astro A5 gear kit. I added billet shift keys in the 3-4 syncro assembly and a 9310 main shaft along with the standard upgrades like carbon fiber syncro rings, steel bearing retainer and the cluster gear retainer plate. I have done several of these in the past and they are bad to the bone. They are a direct bolt in with nothing more than a clutch disc swap and will handle 10 second passes pretty easy. I even know of a few guys that have clicked off 9 second passes as well.

I'd spend the money on this type of unit versus a TKO or G Force unit any day of the week for a normal Mustang street/strip set up. Light weight, fits well and will handle the abuse.

I blew 3rd in a new gforce t5 and went to a hanlon faceplated tko and no more issues (except a few high rpm grinds).

Sounds like you build some bad t5s, is the case ever an issue?
