  • Hot rod mag: low buck turbo power. possible?

In this months Hot rod Magazine there is a story about a 4.6L 2v turbo build.
    The whole home-made kit cost $2,298 and put out 592hp @ 14psi :

    paraphrased:

    - Sct programmer- $379
    - 76mm Turbo- CX racing- $499
    -Tubular Exhaust Manifolds- Ebay-$100
    -ATW Intercooler-CX racing-$140
    - 3inch tubing kit/clamps-$83
-Manual Wastegate Controller- CX racing- $29
-Oil Feed and Drain kit-CX racing-$30
    - BOV-CX Racing- $29
    -FAST 36Lb injectors- Summitt- $297
    -New Spark Plugs $29
    - T4 turbo Flange- $19

And a whole bunch of tubing from a muffler shop.

I realize that you would have to factor in another $500 for dyno tuning and that stock internals on a 97 cobra would only take around 450hp. How do-able is this?
How hard would it be to install and what would be different on a 97 cobra 4v? any advice is appreciated. I was going to put this money towards a bike this summer, but if I can get 450hp out of my car I would gladly take it instead.

If you have a 4v already wouldn't an 03 eaton swap be easier?

I saw that article. The only real problem I have with it is that when that cheap ass turbo grenades it is probably going to fuck some shit up.

That and the cheap kit they pieced together comes nowhere near close to being able to fit in an engine compartment. So add in more money for fabwork, bends...

Some of the chinese crap on ebay is actually pretty decent but I would put more money in the turbo and pick up a borg warner piece or even a junkyard turbo if you really want to get cheap. Either way, if that turbo comes apart it will send shrapnal into the motor and probably take out the whole thing.

Exactly, if you want to go cheap, do it everywhere but the turbo. If some tubing cracks, it isn't going to ruin your month!

                I'm a noob. Explain. Lol.

Would an 03 eaton swap work on my car? Would it be cheaper? Don't you need C heads, 03 intake etc?

Your best bet is an On3Performance turbo kit. It's got a masterpower turbo, which i know some dont like, but Brooks here has had good luck with em.

I'm strongly looking at doing an ON3 kit.

..not only that, but 36# for 592HP! Yeah, sure, at 100psi.

Funny you should mention that, I JUST ordered 2 76MM turbos off of ebay straight from Hong Kong. From the pictures they appear to be exact copies of the MP turbos. I mean, the turbine looks exactly like them. I'll be doing a writeup/build thread soon for my truck (which these are going on). We'll see from the unbiased viewpoint.

The MPT70's are NOT made in China - they are made in Brazil... not sure if there's a whole lot of difference.. but my MPT70 worked flawlessly while I had it. I have a friend who's getting ready to install the ON3 kit on a 2V car - just looked at it last night. They still look "ok" and sell a lot of them based on bling alone (they're all polished). I will say this, the one I looked at will most likely crack at some point in time.

OP: Don't take it the wrong way, but quit trying to be so damn cheap. IF you are as much of a noob as you say you are, I don't know that I'd be getting a turbo setup for my car... and if I did, I'd be looking for something that's most likely to be problem free and a good quality part, as opposed to something that's probably not going to fit right off the bat, or break in short order.

the b heads won't take an eaton swap unless someone makes an adapted lower intake.

I knew they had a kit for 2v's. I guess I assumed they had one for the older 4v's.

I just ordered a kit from on3 last week, and recieved it today, the only thing that looks iffy to me is the fact that I might have to cut some of the piping off to make the MAF fit, other than that, the wastegate and BOV seem to be exact tial knockoffs. Headers are mild steel, but this kit is going on a foxbody. I also ordered the y-pipe as well. I hope the kit works out.
