  • 02 GT 2v making tapping noise

So I was driving my wife's GT the other day and notice that, well how do I explain this....it makes a rapid tapping sound when slowly climbling through the rpm's. I only hear it when the engine unloads, like as you are letting off the gas to shift gears, it will briefly make the sound. also, if I just gradually climb through the rpm's, in say 1st or 2nd gear, right around 2-2500 rpm it will start making that tapping sound and will continue making it if I keep it at that rpm. As soon as I let of the gas, or acellerate it stops.

thanks for any help. Sounds like it needs to be fixed STAT !!!

Doesn't sound like a rod. I supposed it could be a lifter but wouldn't a lifter make some kinda noise ALL the time ? Doesn't sound like the clutch/TO bearing.

Seems like I heard something about the timing chain tensioners or some shit being chronic on these cars. Im just hoping it is something I can take care of myself.

It wouldn't hurt to check the timing chain components. The chain guides are crap. It wouldn't surprise me that the synthetic parts of the guides are worn out.

rod.... after going through everything else it was that... easiest way i found out about it was to kill cylinders individually by unplugging the coil pack and when the noise quit that was the knocking cylinder. it quit making the noise because the piston was only in coast mode and didnt have the force put on it to create the knock.

what kind of oil do you run? if you run anything other that 5w20 it does not lubricate the hydraulic lash adjusters (lifters) as well with the modular motors. so if you are I would first try an oil change or if you have over 100k and the stock timing chain then I would say a rod because of metal shavings that come off of the tension arms when they get worn down and get sucked up by the oil pump
