  • Tire Question

I went and had new tires put on my wifes G6 today and also had an alighment done being the tire wear on the old tires showed it was needed. The tire shop called and said the car needed new shocks/struts so I told them I would take care of that issue. They went ahead with the new tires and an alighment....Went and picked up the car and on the way home noticed it hummed worse with the new tires then the old wore/cupped tires..Took it back to tire shop where of course they told me it was because it was a cheaper house brand tire. I could beleive this to a point but this humming is very loud and like nothing I have heard from a cheap tire...I am thinking the balancing is not correct or they did not do a good alignment on it...The question is: If the red mark is not lined up with the valve stem can that cause issues? One of the marks is 180 off of the valve stem...

I agree to a point...But this noise is much louder than what it was making with tires that had heavy wear on the inside and raised patterns all the way around...Also I have ran many cheap tires and am pretty certain this humming is not just from a "cheap tire"....But thanks for your input....

the red mark on the tire usually has an effect on balancing but not at a level where you will notice. and a wheel out of balance will cause the steering wheel to shake if its on the front or your seat if its in the back. and yes cheap tires do make a hum noise but shouldn't be as load as your describing. so i have no advice on where to start looking for a problem, sorry.

Just went to the store as a passenger in the car...From really listening it sounds as if it is only coming from the right front wheel...Going to look at that area tomorrow before heading back to the tire shop...The noise sounds like a true mud tire on the payment....Humming starts at around 30 and gets louder the faster you go and then level changes when coming to a stop...

R/F wheel bearing. Have them swap the front wheels from left to right and see if the noise moves to the left.

Checked that this morning and there is no play in the wheel...Also the noise was not there before the new tires and nothing on the alighment was changed on that side..Pulled tire off and there is a bad section in the tire about 6 inches long...There are several small round flat areas along with several longer narrow area....

Sounds like you have it figured out.
By the way, just because there isn't play in the wheel doesn't mean you don't have a bad wheel bearing.

Thought I did but then I did figure it out...Went back to the tire shop this morning and talked with the manager there(diffearnt guy). He got the car put on a lift and started looking into the issue. Swapped the suspect tire around and the noise stayed...Checking the wheel bearing while on the lift there was zero play but listening to it run while on the lift you could hear noise coming from the bearing...So will be repalcing bearing tomorrow......

If the manager from yesterday would have looked into the issue instead of blaming it on cheap tires then I wold have this issue corrected already....
