Help with 4.10 Ford racing gears

Several things I have learned is there is no great way with out the special tools with that being said I have done many sets at the ford house and at home with out them and have never had any problems out of any of them. Pinion depth is probably the most crucial measurement in setting gears. I made a plate that bolts to the cap holes and goes straight across the bottom. I bolt it down and measure from ther to the head of the pinion (wih carrier a@d caps removed). I then take that measure ment right it down. I do as johnny stated and measure from the head of the pinion to the back side of the shim and try to get a shim that gets you close to the same thickness. Install and check the depth against the above measurements. That way you check your work.
I also try to set back lash at 8-10 especially with new bearings as they will wear in a little bit. Also raetech sells a crush sleeve eliminator that makes this process very easy and its reusable for around 20 dollars89 dove grey lx, turbo blowthrough
