  • Homemade turbo kit.

Who has made a homemade turbo kit? What is all needed and can I get most of the parts from a junk yard? Where do I get all the piping made up? I tried to search but really didn't come up with a lot.

They kits for my car are upwards of 6K and I really don't want to spend that. Car is a 96 Cobra, 4.6 4V.

    Thanks,
    -A

I'm gonna move this over into the garge. There's a ton of threads on this, search it out man.

Edit - I'll also add, you need to be more specific on details, like - What car?

There's no cheap way to build a kit on those cars, period.

By the time you build a kit, add the necessary peripherals - home made or not, your in it for a pretty penny. Home made still requires a certain skill set, a lot of time, and some 'special' tools that not everyone has.

There's been a bunch of people use the ebay stuff with some success, but it seems a tubular K member is mandatory, and truthfully a 'good' kit would have a tubular K member in the car already.

I probably have closer to $5k in mine buying a premade kit + all of the supporting mods.

                x2..

a "one-off" kit will still nickel and dime the budget builder..

lol, I wasn't going to do it myself just buy the parts and have a shop do it.

But after this thread I think I'm going n2o.

Two of them... the big ones!

I'm probably the cheapest mofo on this board and I couldn't possibly dream of just acquiring all the necessary parts for less than two grand. If you're talking about having someone install it and someone tune it, $3500 easily. In all reality, if you do want to go turbo, I'd first find the person who you want to do it THEN worry about which route to take. Some shops have a lot of experience with certain kits or kits plus a little of their own fabbing. It'll probably work out better for you on cost and quality.

You're right, you can't. Not under normal circumstances at least - Yeah, sure, there's the one time deal situations, but they rarely happen.

The ebay kits seem to be a hit or miss as far as long long they last - cracking, rusting etc..
...but believe it or not the turbos - I've seen some decent feedback on them. I just ordered two of them for my test vehicle. (thread upcoming)..

Something to consider though, for the occasional bottle user - Nitrous is probably fine. For someone who uses a bottle every week or more - it's not worth it IMHO, in less than a year you'd have enough to pay off your turbo kit with the current cost of nitrous. Also, faulty equipment or improper use on a nitrous car causes BIG problems. Faulty equipment or improper use on a turbo car, causes oil out the downpipe, maybe some trash in your intercooler (it acts as a good pre-filter to the engine )

I'd recommend hanging out over at theturboforum.com and getting learned up. Buying prefab and doing the work yourself is the cheapest bet IMO. I wish someone made prefab stuff for my car....
