  • Best combo for my car?

Ok, so my 1990 5.0 broke down a few months ago and is gunna need a new short block! My origanal plan was to go ahead and and throw a Windsor in it but then noticed it's gunna take a while to gather the money for the build.

So the new plan is to throw a stock 302 block back in my car just to have it running while I save up for the Windsor build, my problem is I have two sets of heads and two cams to choose from and was wondering what the best combo would be.

I have a set of ported Windsor Sr and ported 69 351 heads, and an e and x cam! When the car was running it had the 69 heads and the e cam and ran good but I always wanted more, but Im not sure if the Windsor Sr heads are going to be to big for the 302. Any help and suggestions is appreciated, thanks

I think thr Sr's are to big for the 302 . The 69 windsor heads are a good fit .

Is it an Auto or a stick? Whats gears are in the diff? If it's a stick or an auto with a 3000+ stall then I say Sr heads, X-Cam, mill the heads to achieve 10.1, 1 3/4 Longtubes, Holley or TF "R" intake with a 75mm tb. A 302 is a Windsor so I'm assuming you mean a 351? All those parts will work good with a 351, but unported those heads wil hold you back.

Guess I left alot of info out! 5 speed 3.73 gears sub frame connectors, just bought some upper and lower control arms, I HAD a trick flow upper an lower intake, but sold it off since I was gunna do the 351, so I'll be looking for a CHEAP intake set up also! I have bbk shortys with a h pipe that goes to some flowmasters

What size are the valves in the Sr's and milled with that cam you think they will work with stock pistons ?

Isky makes a pisto notching tool that isn't all that challenging to use. Sell the Sr's and buy some used 170 TW heads. Saw a pair on the Corral for $700 this past weekend. You are correct, the 2.02 valve heads won't work with the stock shortblock unless the stock cam is used or a custom cam with precise valve timing events to prevent PTV issues.

So I found a block that my buddy is going to let me have so I'm just going to invest in some forged pistons and get it rebuilt. Now with that said should I use the Windsor Sr over the 69 Windsor heads and order some pistons that will bring compression up to around 10:1? Or would the sr's be to big for a 302?

I guess it all boils down to what kind of performance you are looking for . You said the Sr.'s are ported and so are the 69 heads . I think that the ported Sr.'s are a lot of head for a 302 unless you plan to rev it very high and if you drive it on the street the loss of low end would not be worth it . I would get a good piston to bump the compression up to 10-10.5 and have good size notches for good cam options . This is just my oppinion and looking at it from the way I drive my car allot on the street and a little on the track .

Cool, i guess I'll just keep the 69's on there then since I like that low end torque and it will get driven alot on the streets! Thanks

Stock parts are going to give you stock power. Run the Sr's and X cam. Use the 69 heads as a pattern to sand down the pistons and follow this method http://sbftech.com/index.php/topic,15194.0.html . Try and find a big intake TFS R, RPM II, Spyder, etc... Should run pretty good.

If I end up doing the sr's couldnt I just get pistons that are going to fit with those heads instead of notching them? Since I am going to buy pistons anyways?

^^ agree. But if you find used stockers.......
