  • Transmission Cooler

I'm about ready to drop some cash on a trans cooler and it looks like theres a ton to choose from. Different sizes, etc. I've got a glide/brake and I want to drive it on the street so I want to get the maximum cooling available.

    These look like ok deals:
The Cool Max External Transmission Cooler is ideal for ultra high-performance or off-road vehicles. Plate-style construction, the most efficient and lasting design available, offers maximum cooling by isolating the fluid heat from coolant, which is useful in vehicles with high-stall torque converters. An electric fan provides optimum heat transfer, and the 14"" x 11"" cooler mounts in any position. Includes aluminum brackets & hardware (thermostat not included).

Then theres another company called derale with a ton of options but i've never heard of them.

If you just have to have a fan on it because of air flow or space constraints this one is a good option.

If you have plenty of air flow there is really no need for the fan and you could just get a good one from Hayden or Long.

I have an intercooler and radiator on a stock nose 4 eye. I dont know what kind of air flow it will get but I imagine its probably gonna be pretty weak

I personally like the bm super cooler. Its a plate style cooler and seems to hold up very well...

this... I always use the largest one they got! Although not a racing application, I once put one on my father-in-laws 96 F350 dually and it dropped the temps 50 degrees in normal driving and never got over 195 while towing his fifth wheel RV.

i had real good luck and results with the b&m super cooler using a 10" 3,800 stall. no problems running a 4r70w. even with the o/d disabled with the line pressure cranked up. and if you find that it's not adequate with the external cooler alone, you can always add an electric fan. i mounted it right in front of the condenser right in the middle of the grill area where it got plenty of air.

if you want optimum cooling, don't use rubber hoses (like i did), use metal tubing. however, it is a lot of extra work and you'll need a flare kit.

It depends on what kind of a hurry you are in, and what kind of fabbing you want to do.
On a lot of Ford trucks that have factory towing packages, the tranny cooler is the desired plate type. You can walk down the row at a JY looking behind the grill and easily see them. Basically, you can pick up the equivalent of a B&M $100 cooler for $10-$25 dollars.
Get it home, flush it, fab a bracket or two and you're golden.
