Well, I was initially going to just put gears in the 8", but I have a shake in the car that I believe to be because of that rear. It never did that before I put the rear end in. I've had 3 different sets of wheels on it balanced, and 4 different driveshafts, and it still does it.

When I got that 8" it had a spring perch broken off of it, and I had some guy of questionable skill weld it back on. I'm afraid it's not exactly where it needs to be. Either that or maybe I have a pinion angle problem. It doesn't shake under hard acceleration.

Maybe I'll just rob the 8" out from under the other 68 I have and put gears in it and just swap it out.

If it was me I would build me a real nice 8 and be done with it.

I'm going to be doing a swap in my car soon too. I was able to get my hands on a 9" housing from a 58' wagon, which is 57.75" compared to my cars stock 9" housing at 59.25". They are getting harder to find, but these are great in the 67-68 cars too, as they were the narrowest factory 9" housings.

I already have a Traction Lok and 31-splines in my existing 9" that I'm planning to just move over into the new housing, but my dilemma is axle length. I know that I'll have to shorten my current axles, but the good news is that 72'-back axles have the ability to be shortened b/c they have longer than needed spline section already. However, I'm not sure exactly how much extra spline they had...seems I recall that it is typically about 1" that can be cut off of them. Anyone know off-hand?

It's difficult to describe without a picture, but as part of this process I'm also investigating the possibility of relocating the rear brake brakets to the insicde of the axle flange to gain another .25". The Baers install with the caliper bracket sandwiched between the bering retainer and flange, which actually push the back wheels out an extra .25". Ironically, my measurements so far appear that relocating those brackets to the inside will bring the caliper and axle (rotor) both in exactly .25", which along with the narrower housing means that I will need to shorten my axles 1".

Rreemo, why are you wanting to go narrower? Your car already has a nice stance. Are you changing out to wider wheels?

Yes, I won't be changing the stance of the car from how it sits right now....just looking to take advantage of unused space in the rear wheel wells....net/net will be a lot more lip on the rear wheels and also stepping up from 275/40's on 9.5" wheels to 295/35's on 10" wheels.

I'll step up to whatever I can make fit and I've love for that to be a 305 or 315, but so far it's looking like I'm going to be rubbing with my stance and anything bigger than these 295's that I've been mocking up.

My 69 has 315's on a 10.5" wheel. 28/10.5 MT slicks fit it too.

I just did an 8" out of a '66. I found a guy locally that had a third member set up with trac loc and 3.55 gears brand new, popped it right in. It was simple and should hold up to the abuse in store for it.
