Where to have work done on PT cruiser?

My dad has an older PT Cruiser (2.4L n/a) and the transmission basically took a shit. I keep telling him he needs a new car anyway, but he insists he loves it and wants to get it fixed. Anyone know of a reputable place around north dallas that might be able to fix it up. The stealership is trying to fuck him every way they know how.

Auto. I'm not too experienced with autos, but what he can describe is happening is this

"When the car is in drive and I press the accelereator, the transmission just slips, it goes nowhere. After a short while a loud bang and the car takes off finally but is still slipping quite bad"
