  • Gears for 1997 F150 4.2L V6

I've been thinking about putting a Trac-Lok in the '97, and while it's open throwing something better than the factory 3.08s that are in it.

How hard is it to do, and how hard is it to correct the speedo in this?

I also want gears that aren't going to just dessimate highway mileage. Would it be best to go 3.55 or 3.73?

The truck doesn't have a tach, so I'm not sure what it's turning at 70 mph.

3.73 is a great all around gear and will still be great on the hwy. If you have no prior knowledge or experience I would stay the hell away from your rear end. There are people on this site including myself that have the knowledge and tools to do the job that can help you but like I said I would not attempt it yourself unless you like weird noises.

Oh yea, I was going to solicit someone who has a good rep here to do the work.

I'm not messing with backlash, etc.....

I have an 01 with 3.55's in the rear... it does fine, but Im thinking a bit steeper gear would do well with a traction loc... I already have the one tire fire situation while turning with mild acceleration, so steeper gears would definetly need traction lock.

I used to, but I have since left ford. I can however install the gears.

You seem pretty lever headed, but you don't pay for gas on your work vehicle and according to several relaible sources gas is about to be $5.00 a gallon before labor day. Those steeper gears are going to do nothing but hurt your/sons MPG which im assuming isn't all that great to begin with. You should have bought him a sports car or Lightning if he wanted to go fast. And you have a 25 gallon gas tank, $5.00 x 25 gls. = $125.00 fill-ups.

btw IIRC you have the Heritage f-150 which uses a 28 or 30 gallon tank. I know this because my Lightning when on empty would was 25gl but would take almost 30 when driven past the empty.

When gas hits $5/gallon, I should have plenty of work. People start stealing shit left and right when gas goes up. We had offers of sitting on construction sites because thieves were stealing diesel from construction sites when fuel was high.

I won't like paying the high $$ for gas, but it will give me the chance to make it back.

It had 29" tires stock and I now have 32" tires on it. I figure going to 3.55s would be just a tad over breaking even.
