It made above average power for the size of the cam, I think it was that we paid attention to all the small things.

Yeah forget everything you know about V8's. LS1's, the new coyote type motors and pretty much any modern V8 respond real well to mods. A cam swap is usually all you need to make 400+ on a LS motor.
Like I have said, get you a stock low miles 6.0L (even a 5.3 wont make much less power) and stick a cam in it and roll with it. Very good street manners and make big power. Stick a nice stall behind it and you will be real happy.
