  • 92F150 gear ratios?

My truck currently has a 4:56 gear ratio out back because the previous owner did quite a bit of towing. Seeing as the 300ci already gets shitty mpg's I'm thinking about throwing a higher gear ratio in there. If I were to go to a 3:73, 3:10, or even 2:73 ratio, how many extra mpg's can I expect to pick up? If the tire size matters at all I'm running 31x10.50x15, which is 3 sizes bigger than stock.

How much will that differ from a 4:56 ratio?

10% roughly. A 3.90 gear might be a decent gear ratio also. Is the truck a 5 speed or AOD?

It's a 5spd. I'll put it this way, when I'm in 5th gear doing 70mph, I'm between 3500-4000 RPM... not quite an overdrive gear.

I'd probably step down to a 3.73 gear, stock tire should be a 235\75r15 I would guess which is about a 29" o.d.

Yes, stock tire is a 235/75/15 but I'm running a 31x10.50x15 - was running a 265/75/15 which is 3 sizes bigger than stock. I'm worried 3.73 won't be a high enough ratio to really notice a difference.

4:56 to 3:73 is a big difference. You could go 3:55. The I6 loves to chug.

Keep the gears. Put some taller tires on it and it will effectively decrease the gear ratio. If you step down too much in gear with that turd of a motor, you will not like it. Not when you're acclimated to the torque multiplication of the 4.56s. It'll feel like a total turd. Trust me on this.
