  • Pulling an engine...

Can I get the engine with the transmission attached out of my car in a standard sized garage with the garage door open while the car is on jack stands? The car will be backed in so the door might be an issue. Just curious to see if anyone had done it. Thanks.

i know with my swap on my 00GT i only had a couple of inches to spare before i hit the roof with the engine hoist on its shortest setting, and the car on the wheels lowered 2"

personally, I don't think it's possible because it's on stands. take it off the stands and maybe, just maybe.

I do not think I would try it. The best way I ever found, was to pull the motor with a wrecker. I took off the sling and away I went.

Ive pulled a few with a backhoe, found it easier to hook the chainfall to the loader bucket and raise/lower till everythings clear, then up with bucket hydraulics.

You could start off on stands to get everything disconnected then lower the body to pull the engine. If you are wanting to keep it on stands for the entire process it probably wont work unless you sawzall the radiator support and pull the nose off.

Gotcha guys, thanks. Guess I'll pull the engine in the driveway then push the car into the garage and put the engine in the other "bay". I appreciate the input, just figured I'd ask.

I'd pull the trans then pull the motor separate. I've had the motor out of my car 2 times this year and it seems a lot easier do it in pieces rather than all at once and risking banging something up.

Even if you have a load leveler with your engine puller?

It is worth every penny to pay a shop to remove engine/tran. A standard garage is too small then you have to worry about the car falling on you the mess it makes etc. From someone who just tried to go the cheapass route its not worth it IMO

Eh... I've pulled it before. Really not that bad, just the last time I did it it was outside. This is going to be my winter project, pulling the engine and doing a lot of other shit. Thanks for the comments guys.

I do auto repair by profession and hobby, I pulled my motor at my personal shop using my chain hoist. Both times I did it with minimal mess. I've helped in removing and installing several engines and it just seems easier to remove the trans first and not have to hassle with all the extra work, but that's just my opinion from experience. Everyone has there own opinion on what they feel works best for them. GLW your project.
