Quiet an old engine

go get you some straight 50 weight valvoline and do an oil change...will be fine until the weather gets cold

Drain the oil out and run it for a bit. I guarantee it will get quieter. Well probably not at first.

Lucas is a miracle liquid. Just pour it on the valve covers when the engine is hot.

I use synthetic oil. I'm not picky about which brand. A while back, I tried the Valvoline High Mileage synthetic and it made both of my vehicles' engines run noticeably quieter.
