Not a long term design for sure. Ford probably saved $1/engine with that design.

It was a joke I heard my gpa tell when I was a kid. The logic is sound. He probably really saw it.

Marvel Mystery oil & STP were the go to products that the old timers talked about back in the late 70's, early 80's when I was learning about cars. I used the STP regularly when I was a teenager in my '63 Fairlane Sport Coupe, engine was a 302 of unknown mileage. Noticeable difference on that engine with the STP in it and I drove it hard.

I haven't used either of these products in years and tend to stay away from the "miracle in a can" stuff. These are the only 2 that I have used that work.

For modern engines it seems that just running thicker oil seems to be the best way to go. I wouldn't trust that old stuff in these newer engines. They seem to be pickier.
