  • '03 F150 problems

It is a 2003 F150 4.2L V6 and it is throwing up a few codes.

    P1071
    P1074
    P0303
    P0316

The problem it is having, however, is that when you accelerate it starts to shudder. It feels almost if something is holding it back and then it will go.

So far, the oil has been changed, MAF was cleaned, spark plugs/wires have been replaced, and the air filter has been changed. Any ideas?

P0171 sys too lean bank 1
p0174 sys too lean bank 2
    p0303 #3 cyl misfire
p0316 Missfire occurred in first 1000 revs

Fix the #3 miss fire first IMO.

Seens whats happening is p0303 is happening causing p0316. Since o2 sensors cannot read fuel only molecules in the air, it is saying there is a lean mixture when in fact it just just p0303 causing p0171 to show up. I cannot speak for p0174, but if there is more then 100k on your o2 sensors, change them, and unplug the negative side of the battery while doing that. Try it then and see what you get.

      Good luck!

needs intake gaskets and isolator bolts to start.

          Is this a common problem?

Just trying to find a solid answer so as not to go broke with stuff that didn't work .

I'd say it needs a mass airflow meter to fix the lean condition. Cleaning a bad mass airflow meter does nothing. Fix the misfire. Go from there.

EXTREMELY. id almost put money on it without seeing it. HOWEVER, misfires need to be adressed before the lean condition. They could be related, but not very common

Hands down intake gaskets and bolts, very common. Check pcv hoases and probably needs a coil for the misfire. Depending on mileage I would recomend the o2s as well cause they get lazy over time. Above mentioned intake gaskets fail due to oil passing through long intake runners and it just deteriorates the oring gaskets and the rubber around the bolts.

So the coil and 02 sensor should be looked at to address the misfire and the intake gasket/bolts and MAF for the lean condition. Thanks guys. Oh and the truck has 140k miles, I forgot to mention that in the first post.
