  • Parts washer solvent ?

Wondering what those of you with parts washers in the home garage are using for solvent. I've done a little of research on it and it seems like some smell bad and some leave a slight residue behind on the parts. I'd like to avoid both of these characteristics if possible.

    TIA

50/50 Simple Green and water. I also have a barrel of the old school Safety Clean solvent that works wonders but is bad for the environment that the hoarder in me will not allow me to use.
Magnus, I am your father. You need to ask your mother about a man named Calvin Klein.

I used to have Safety Kleen parts washer solution. It didn't smell too bad, but I was never impressed with its cleaning ability.

I soaked some really nasty suspension parts in Simple Green's purple industrial cleaner a while back, and was blown away with how clean it got the parts. It was like pulling bones out of a smoked rib, the gunk just fell away.

I have now replaced most of my petroleum-based cleaners with this stuff. It works great, lasts a long time, is non-toxic, environment friendly, and cheap.

Kerosene. Theres a gas station in Van Alstyne that sells it out of the pump so its fairly cheap.

We use mineral spirits in ours. Works pretty good.

Looks like Amazon has it for $14/gal shipped to your door. I think it's pretty close to that at Home Depot or Lowe's, too.

Weird I thought SafetyKleen all went thru their dealers. I think it used to, anyway. Sorry, was questioning the SafetyKleen.

                      You're lye-ing, right?

Also somebody recommend a good parts washer. Maybe something a bit better than the harbor freight special.

Go find a used dishwasher..you'd be surprised how well they clean small parts.
