  • Trans slips only after overdrive has been engaged

    06 f150 5.4L
Shifts fine driving around on side streets but when I get to higher speeds it starts slipping. Even if I come to a complete stop it will slip going into every gear. Anybody know what's up? Common thing?

When is the last time you've changed the oil and filter in the transmission? Is it low on fluid? How many miles? As I mentioned in another thread, I've had problems with torque converter stutter/slippage on 4R70/4R75E trans before. Fortunately, the fix was just to do a flush. Then install an external trans cooler to address the problem of heat over time. I say that assuming you don't have a factory tow package. The ATF breaks down over time due to heat and affects lockup. As with all auto trans, most problems are heat related. Sure, it could be something like a bad OD band or a misfire, but I would start with the basics.

Being a 5.4 3v make sure it's not misfires. If it has factory spark plugs then they definitely need to be replaced. The service on those 5.4 3v plugs has been changed to every 60k. Being if the transmission is or was slipping that bad for that long the fluid should smell burnt by now. If your cruising speed and you lightly step into the gas and it's acting up I bet it's misfires.

They fail more than you think. Usually just over 100,000 miles.

Do you know how much they cost? This is the first time I have had to pay for a tranny to take a dump on me.
