Damn fuel line quick disconnect

96 F150, but has the same quick disconnects on the fuel lines as most all Fords

Went to replace the fuel pump in the rear tank. One line came right off the pump with no problem. The 2nd line came loose but the retainer inside the line came out. SUCKOLA.

For the life of me I can't remember which line is the send and which is the return, but the one that broke is on the larger diameter line. Since this truck has the low pressure pumps in the tanks that feed the high pressure pump on the fuel rail would I just chop the end off and use some good braided fuel line to splice in and clamp to the pump line?

Is this a diesel? If it's not, it shouldn't have a high pressure pump on the rail, just a regulator. It's not ideal to clamp it, but I am not going to say that I haven't done it before.

Bigger line should be feed line, smaller will be the return.

yeah, they have two tanks and one frame rail mounted pump.

Not in 96. Somewhere around 92 they switched to the FDM, which is located in the tank and went to dual high pressure pumps, located inside the tanks.

You were right. I had a pic of the underside of the truck that had the high pressure pump on the rail in plain sight. However, after looking at it again I realized that it's a pic of the 86 that I used to have.

I kinda look at it this way. It might not be the greatest idea to splice in some high pressure fuel line and use clamps. But it looks like my only other option is replacing the entire line from the tank to the filter. That would require pulling out the side tank just to get to it. So I figure I might as well see if a good patch will work.

It does, but either the timing gears broke, or the camshaft broke. Basically it will turn over, but the dizzy doesn't spin. Not a stripped gear either because your can't turn the rotor by hand. It's an I6.
