  • Mitutoyo dial caliper

My dad gave this to me about a month ago.

    Model: 500-195

He doesn't remember last time he used it or even powered it on. Of course it's dead. Has a sticker that says last time it was calibrated was back on 4/24/03.

Do I need to get it re-calibrated, if so, where should I go? Or can I just put in battery and start using it.

Stick in a new battery and have at it.

Are you using it for a reason that it needs to be calibrated?

No, just asking since who knows when this was last turned on. He was cleaning his work shop and found it in corner and just gave it to me. Was in it's case, so it's in perfect condition. I have never used digital caliper and don't know if it would need one since it's been dead for long time. I'll just throw in battery and start messing around with it.

measure a few drill bits and check it but I am sure it will be fine. Calibration would cost too much unless you need it to be.

You are spot on with the drill bits; I never once thought of that.

A vernier caliper is not really accurate enough to require calibration. As the old fart who taught me machining liked to say "They are ver nier but not exact". If it reads zero when closed chances are that it is as calibrated as it ever will be.

If you have some standards you can check the accuracy against them. I've heard good things about Mitutoyo's measuring gear.

Shit, that's much nice than my dial version. I close it, rotate the dial until the needle points at zero, set the lock and it's calibrated! Tada!

                  shit is pretty cool

the drill bit was pretty good idea

measuring those and caliper show difference of a couple 10,000th's, give or take.
So pretty damn perfect to me. just round it up to next 100th, and it's right on

I have 1 thru 6 inch Brown and Sharpe standards at the house. Feel free to come by and check out your calipers. Mitutoyo's are normally pretty good ones.
