  • Quick injector question

a friend is having trouble on a fox Mustang and thinks he has it narrowed down to the injectors. What is an easy quick way of checking to see if the injectors are firing properly?

There's a specific "injector" noid light?

Yeah. They're cheap and they allow you to check current/continuity to the injectors (is the injector driver sending a pulse to them to fire?) without having to mess with grounding them and possibly frying the injector driver in your PCM.

            even a test light works.

              Thanks 86

And with the test light I'm assuming the wire would need to get pierced, correct?

Yes and unless you have a high impedance one you might burn up the injector driver in the ECM as Don noted.

So for the sake of him not burning the driver out, would it be safer to get the Noid light kit?

IF... IF... you're going to use a test light, you're going to be back-probing the connector. Don't pierce the wiring sheath and don't accidentally fry the driver.

The injector driver in your PCM actually creates a ground, not power. Ford uses negative trigger injector pulsing, this means that the injectors always have 12v power: the PCM driver completes the circuit to fire the injector by creating a ground path. Testing the car by completing the circuit on the ground side only proves that the injector has power (which it always does), not whether the driver is firing the injector. This is why noid lights are awesome, they literally operate like a fuel injector would if the driver is working. If the noid light isn't going off, you have a reason to start digging in deeper.
