  • Turbo guys... gaskets or gasket maker?

After talking to a couple of guys recently about sealing up a turbo system they both swore by this gasket maker called Ultra copper or something like that. I'm just wondering what the general consensus is about this and if it's good stuff what exact product should I get?

To be clear I want to seal all of the joints on the hot side from the turbo to the joints at the manifolds.

Rtv106 . Red high heat. We use it on aircraft engine bleed air systems.

Depends on the engine and the stage of compression that the bleed air is being pulled off of... but 1000 degrees plus...

I have heard that the ultra copper is just orange dust when you take the joint apart down the road?

The tube says 700 degrees intermittent, If I am putting this right off of the exhaust manifold to tubing connection is it going to hold up?

I used it on my SVO manifold and turbo, no issus. Brooks does the same.

nope! I haven't ever seen anything resembling dust.

                        Inline,

Like you, I was initially skeptical about using Ultra Copper RTV instead of traditional gaskets. After lots of gasket failures, I used the Ultra Copper with good results.

You need to have a good fit between the sealing flanges, but that is also required for traditional gaskets to work.

                        Ultra Copper RTV works great.

                        Best,

                        Tom

The best gasket is no gasket at all. Rotaries have a MUCH higher EGT then any piston engine and I tried everything you can think of for gaskets on the hot side of a turbo and the thing that works the best is milling both surfaces flat and lapping them for a minute or two with coarse grit compound and then just bolting the parts together without a gasket. Mazda also has some multi layer stainless steel gaskets that never fail but they do not come in sizes that are useful for performance use.
