  • How do the pros clean parts?

I've rebuilt quite a few transmissions at this point and the part that takes 80% of the time is cleaning shit. I clean each needle bearing by hand, scrape all gasket surfaces, clean each tooth of each gear, etc., shit is a beatdown. I think I need to get a parts washer from Harbor Freight, get the big gunk off, next putting it in a sonic cleaner for a while, I found some big ones on ebay for $300.

How do the pros do this stuff, I would imagine they spend 10% of the time on cleaning vs most of it like I do.

The last trans builder I worked with used a standard Safety Kleen leased parts washing bin for the internals and a wash oven for the cases.

We did too. When we moved to our new dealer they didnt hook it up and just let it sit. They offered it to me for my home shop but it was 3 phase and only single phase was available.

I can convert it to single phase for you.

I have one of those shitty little HF parts washers full of expensive Safety-Kleen parts washing solution and let me tell you what. It's fucking worthless.

I've let parts soak in there for weeks and when they come out, they're the same, except soaked in mineral spirits.

The other day I grabbed some industrial purple Simple Green and let a few really grungy suspension parts soak overnight, just to see what it would do. They came out spotless, like they had just been made. Two minutes in the sandblaster took care of the surface rust. It's now my go-to for cleaning up nasty shit. It's cheap too, about $11 per gallon.

It won't remove gasket material but it will definitely get rid of any gunk buildup on internal machined parts. Might be worth a try.
