  • Aftermarket brake systems

I'm looking to order suspension and brakes for the Chevelle. I've already got the suspension selected, just looking at brake systems now. Wilwood, SSBC, Baer and Brembo all have similar systems that are fairly close in price.

Does anyone have good/bad experiences with these companies? Any fitment issues, failures, etc would all be helpful in deciding.

    Thanks in advance.

I've had an SSBC 4 piston caliper system on my Cougar since 2001, and had zero issues. They stop well, even from higher speeds, don't make a lot of dust and don't squeak.

I've used a bunch of the SSBC kits on the early (65-69) mustangs with no real issues and there well put together kits although all those options are nice.

SSBC kits are great for a lower budget. We use a ton of Wilwood brake kits at the shop with excellent success. Are you using a brake booster or adding hydraboost?

Honestly, you are going to be happy with any of those four companies.

I know Wilwood has some really nice kits to fit behind smaller, more vintage sized wheels but are still 4 piston calipers. That's what I'm planning on running on the Camaro to keep the stock Z28 wheels.

I've used Wilwood and Stoptech, the stoptech stuff is much nicer but the wilwood's got the job done.

I bought the entire RideTech coilover kit for my 70' Chevelle, and ended up settling on a Wilwood setup for the brakes. Just like these...

Dynalite 4 Piston Bolt-On Rear Hat & 12.19" Disc Brake Kit with Parking Brake (Part #140-7149-DR)for Both Rear Wheels. Narrow Superlite 6 Piston Bolt-On Front Hub & 12.90" 1-Piece Disc Brake Kit (Part #140-12271-DR)for Both Front Wheels.

Brett from RideTech recommended either Baer or Wilwood to go best with their kit. However, I have used both on other cars, and had better results with Wilwood myself. The Baers weren't bad, but I did have a few issues with the install, and I never could seem to get the balance of them just right. On the other hand, the couple of Wilwood kits I've used were always literally a bolt-on and go.

Two pieces of advice that I have for you - 1) if you are going to step-up to a quality 4-wheel brake setup like one of these, use one of their aftermarket master cylinders as well. The dual bore from Wilwood is nice, and the Remaster from Baer is even nicer, albeit pretty pricey. 2) It also pays to re-plumb all of your lines too....if your car originally had drums on it, you may have some 1/4" hard lines....I can tell you from experience, I had one like that, and switched everything out for 3/16" and it made a world of difference in firmness of the pedal...the brakes were much quicker on response too.

                  Thanks for the opinions!
I'm going ridetech too, and I went with the wilwood setup in black.
