  • Truck won't start after charging..

    2008 F250 v10

Battery was completely dead. Found out that I left a dc/ac converter plugged in inside the armrest compartment and forgot to unplug when I came back from vacation. Truck has been parked since 1/5/16. So pretty much damn near a full month. Sucker was probably dead after few days after I parked it.

Anyways, I let it charge all day till meter read 100%. Meter is getting 12.7 volts at terminal with everything off. It did not want to turn at all. . All lights, dash come on. You turn the key to start, and nothing clicks or anything.

I turned key to on(not start), turn back off and removed key for about 20 secs and tried again and nothing. Not sure what to do? Can it be the battery and/or something else. If it is the battery, won't it at least try to crank the starter?

Sounds like a security system deal. Any aftermarket alarm or factory ford?

Do the lights dim when you turn the key? Will it jump or at least engage the starter with cables attached? 12.7v is useless if there's no amperage behind it.

        is the security light blinking?

I've had 08's that sat for a long time and lost all batteries and KAP/KAM that had to have the SKIM reprogrammed to the keys as the module was blanked out

I originally tried to jump it, but I guess battery was so dead that it took a very long time just for the lights to even appear "bright". Measure volts after taking off cables and was only getting 8.4 volts. I had it jumped and 2nd car running at 2 1/2k RPM for like 8 minutes. That was last night. I put the charger on this morning and let it go till it showed me the green light. Took pretty much entire day for it to get there. I can try to jump it tomorrow since I now have over 12 volts now. Starter does not even attempt to crank. No click or anything. Didn't pay attention to lights since it was middle of day. Little bit ago, all lights come on as normal. When you unlock with factory remote, headlights come on as normal. I didn't try to start though. Just now had my bro and his friend put my water heater in since I'm still crippled..haha

That's what I am thinking. There was an aftermarket, but it was cheap and it left me hanging at parking lot one day about 4 years ago. I had the dealer disconnect it. Box is still there.

As soon as I plug in the key, I do see the "car with lock symbol" pop up and blink slowly, then it disappears. I turn key couple clicks before trying to start, and it shows up solid for a few seconds, then it disappears. After that, I finally turn all the way over and just silence.

              Here is a quick vid...
Looks like security issue. Anything I can do, or is this a trip to dealer??

I still had about 12.4 volts at terminal. Went ahead and tried to jump start and same thing.

if it's a PATS issue... a locksmith can fix it. as can someone with Autoenginuity (08 only, doesn't work on 09-10) as can someone with a Ford IDS.

If you don't currently have two keys, you'll be buying another one.

Locksmith is probably your best/cheapest/easiest bet.

Do you have a code reader?

Looks like PATS needs to be reprogrammed. Let us know how it goes

Called up locksmith and they told me since the lock symbol is not flashing( stays solid and goes away)on 3rd click(right before turning on), it will not be that issue. Told me to go to dealer. SUCKS

so... sometimes on my 6.4 diesels, if there's a communication interruption, it will cause this exact condition.

the way we get past it is to turn the key to run and bridge the starter trigger wire...

I don't know about on a gas truck, but on the diesels, by the passenger side battery, there is a single wire, barrel-shape connector. When disconnected, the inboard side has a male single pin/post visible.

Pull it out of the loom a little and tug it over until you can touch one of the vertical threaded studs/posts coming off of the positive battery cable.

Again, the key must be on/run for the truck to start.

Once the truck is started and all of the modules on the bus are happy, it will restart with the key no problem.

I don't know if the gas trucks have one battery or two or where it's located. But this trick has saved my ass more than a few times when playing binary wizard on the 08+ diesel trucks.

                        HTH!

                          Has one battery

Will go look for that wire

                          Just to be clear...

So one person has key turned all the way while other person grabs that wire and touches + side.?

Negative. Key just has to be in run.

You're going to bypass the key, the cluster, the PCM, etc and put power on the starter trigger wire.

Methinks there's a reason they put it just within reach of the passenger side battery terminal!

I would rule out the battery first, sure you have it jumped but that doesn't mean the cables are any good for a big ass truck motor. I'd get a new battery and go from there.
