  • Leaking lower intake fix

Anyone think this is a good idea? I have used solid RTV the last two times and I don't think it's a good seal. The plates look like a good idea if they solve %100 of the leak.

I've always used rtv, never had a leak, I've always used good stuff though, ultra gray, or the right stuff

Dammit, I've got one leaking right now that I've already fixed once. I've never had one leak on the back until now and it's got my number. I've always used RTV or that "right stuff" gasket maker. I may try this.

I used good RTV I think. It's been a few years since I did it the second time. I think I used enough to cover the gap. But still leaks a little in the front and back. Just enough to piss you off. Gonna pull it apart again in the next few weeks. Hopefully for the last time. I am also going to add a power adder of some kind and was concerned about the RTV not being enough.

Usually it takes me days to do this. It's a garage queen so I take my time. That being said I prob fucked it up. Hopefully the third time is a charm and I get it right.

It has to be install error because I used plenty of pooky in the right areas. I even use four old intake bolts with the heads chopped off and a slot added for a screwdriver so I can slide the intake down in perfect alignment, then remove the bolts. Mine only leaks from the back and this is the only one I've had issues with. I will get it right this time.

Biggest problem I've seen is that no one lets the shit dry before fireing the bitch up.

Ive never had an issue, so maybe I can help...

aftermarket intakes are machined for NO gasket where he's making those stupid ass plates.

OEM intakes need a gasket. I like the felpro that has the blue rubber ones, since I hate cork.

put a bit of this between the gasket and the block to stick it in place, a bead of RTV on the ends where it meets the heads.

That may help. If I remember right I may have had a hard time seating the lower intake and that could have caused the rtv to screw up. I may let the rtv dry for a minute to make it harder when I install it too. I think I am burning a bit of coolant too. I smell it on start up. Could that be the lower intake as well? Or head gasket?

You may have a blown head gasket, and it's pressurizing the crank case. That'll make oil find a place to leave.

Grab one of these and test the coolant.

Everyone also like to ignore the crankcase pressure in general, the stock PCV system on a fox pulls vac on the crankcase at low throttle and also tries at WOT with the vac line in front of the throttle plate helping, assuming the restriction is upstream of the TB it will pull vac on the crankcase at WOT too which is great for ring seal, etc. When you pull all of that off and put some "breathers" on the crankcase all of those nice effects are gone.

Mine is a factory gt40 (explorer). I'll check the head gaskets.

Those two end peices? I've always been told to trash them and just bead some rtv in their place. I've never used them, but I've also never had this issue on another 5.0.

It is extra money, but I always but a stock gasket set just to get the blue silicone end gaskets.
I have never had one leak.
This is on stock, Trick Flow and GT-40/Cobra intakes.
