I'm thinking about buying a 2007 Expedition with the 3 valve 5.4 engine. Are there problems with these engines over 100k? Is there anything to look out for? I've heard mixed opinions on these vehicles. Thanks in advance...

if they havent had frequent oil changes with motorcraft/good filters, it's going to have chain guide/tensioner issues in the future.

I've heard that about all expeditions. Specifically I'm wondering about ticking from these motors?

Thanks, is there any way to tell other than the maintenance records?

Not really, unless it's already ticking. Harder to see indication if the oil has been changed/flushed recently, as many retailers will do in recon. Unless, you know, if there is an off brand filter on it when you pop the hood.

Thanks, may stick with the 2 valve engine. I hear they're stronger?

The three valve is a good engine, but prone to have chain system issue and the notorious plug issue, but yes, the 2v we more dependable.

Pop oil cap and use flash light to see if there is any sludge. As stated above if the previous owner changed oil on time everytime with good filter"motorcraft"that's a huge plus on those engine. Make sure there is no ticking/ knocking noise at idle. And no rattle on start up. Do all 8 spark plugs every 60k.

3 valves don't blow plugs, only 2 valves
