  • Ford Escape - popping through intake and runs rough

    2008 Escape 3.0L 2WD 150K

Idles rough, stumbles occasionally under load, makes a muffled popping sound that you can hear through the intake.

    What I've done so far:

-Scanned for codes/pending codes. Nothing. No stored codes, or current codes.

-Cleaned the MAF, t-body, and IAC. No change

Kind of stumped. If it was a coilpack, or cam/crank sensor, wouldn't it throw a code? I don't hear or see any vacuum leaks.

Anyone run into this? It appears to be a common issue from my Google research, but no definitive solution.

Hopefully not a lifter or valve issue.

Clogged cats were common on some of those years.

        Both of those seem reasonable.

If a coil pack was bad, why no code? Surely there's a misfire.

If the cat was clogged, surely the downstream O2 sensor would throw a code.

        Damn Ford!

Test the coil packs with a volt meter. If that doesn't pan out and you still suspect them, I think you can take them to Oriellys and have them do some kind of check. Can't remember exactly

Some escape PCM's lose the drivers for coil packs over time. It is possible it is starting to lose one now. May have to watch it with a good scanner and check power balance and see which cyl is dropping out.
            Some cars and a bike...

Some say... they have been raced, some a lot

Yeah, I've heard about this somewhere. It would seem it would pick up a missfire and throw a code.

The missfire has to be often enough to set it. Check mode 6 on a good scanner...

Cj is correct on the cats. Worth checking

In-laws had an 05 did the same thing. If I remember reading on some escape forum the coil packs fail causing the unburnt fuel to ruin the cats. Think the fix required new cats, coil packs, plugs, and apparently when you replace the coil packs you have to also replace the PCM
