High volume oil pump question?

Im building a new motor for my new 89 gt and im thinking about putting a high volume oil pump in. my question is can i run 6 quarts in a stock oil pan? and will it hurt anything?

I supposed you could, but why?

I think it would consume large amounts of oil because of windage - the crank sitting in resting oil and slinging it all up in the bottoms of the pistons etc.. more oil sitting in the pan is more oil that gets pumped up in the valve cover area too.. and resting on top of the valve seals etc..

Years ago, knowledgeable "old-school" Ford guys would not use the high volume pumps, due to cavitation at high RPM. They were referring to FE and 335/385 series motors, but I can see how it could still be an issue for the newer stuff.

That's a disclaimer to protect thier shitty ass roll pin that drives the distributor gear.

Thanks for the advise brooks. shaun told me with a high volume it likes to keep alot of the oil on the top side of the motor and it will have a lack of oil on the bottomend.

Would it be ok to run 5qrts of oil or just buy a stock pump.

No problem. They do have a spring in them that can be adjusted to bypass pressure - most people don't mess with it though. You're not doing anything that a million or so other people haven't already tried.. stick to the basics, they work.

I have always had twisted oil pump shafts to replace when friends would go with a high volume or high pressure pump.

The stocker will support everything that a stock block can support. Just make sure to take it apart and clean it thoroughly!

They like to have small bits of metal shavings lurking from the manufacturer that will lock up a pump and twist a shaft with the quickness.

Well i called napa and it turns out its a stock replacement. for some reason i thought it was a high vol.
