The boat has been running rough at lower/cruising rpms lately, then if you opened it up a little, it would clear out. Haven't run it as much this season, but always treat the gas with Startron marine grade ethanol treatment. Never had this problem before this season.

Recently, we were out on it, and expecting friends to join us in an hour, so I opened it up to warm it up and get it smooth running. Hammer down, I see smoke behind me, and I think it's bluish, so I'm thinking I have a wet cylinder for some reason. Wife says it's white, so I look back again, and it's white sure as shit. I look at the temp gauge, and where the boat normally runs ice cold at 120, it's now bumping off 240... Shut it down, let everyone swim, then head back to the dock.

Assessing things, I pull all plugs expecting to have one or two steam cleaned. 1 & 2, 5 & 6 are cleaner than the back two holes, so I'm thinking I've pulled some kind of stunt blowing HG on both sides. I run a compression test, and all cylinders were at 150 (except 5 read at 165, it was the first cylinder I tested).

Now, I'm stumped. The oil looked normal, no milkshake.

I pulled the cover off the impeller, it's not looking compromised in anyway. I didn't pull it out, but from my untrained eye, it looked good, and the rubber wasn't brittle or cracked.

One guy suggested the riser could be clogged up, so I pulled the port side off and looked inside, it looked rusty but not to the point of inhibiting flow.

What could the other culprits be? What would make it run hot, and steam out the back?

I'm in Austin, boat is only run in freshwater.

OK... I see that there are water stains on the starboard side riser where it meets the manifold. Called my friend (head mechanic at Boat Town, but I can't always reach him, so I came here first), and he said it sounds like I need new gaskets on the riser. Water is pushed through the exhaust manifold, the gasses and the water (different jackets/ports) go up and then down, exiting the boat below the water line.

    TG I don't have to pull heads/intake!
