  • 1989 5.0 timing issues....

Will a bad ECU/ECM cause it to dump full timing in without the spout being connected... were setting base at 0 and 10 and can never get less than 30-50 degrees timing on the balancer and the slightest attempt to retard the timing stalls and engine dies out

Sounds like the timing marks on the balancer have rotated

    Get a new balancer

Sounds like you got the wrong dampener. Over the years the timing marks have been clocked differently to compensate for where the tab was mounted on the engine. Try finding true TDC with a mechanical stop and see if it matches up with the marks on the dampener.

New timing chain was properly installed as well with key marks matching exactly at each other with pin from the cam in between I already know everything thing that is about to be said I've been working on this for a month everything is brand new except for ecm ecu reason why I originally asked if a bad one will want to dump full timing in without the spout connected

A bad ECU has no way of doing anything to the timing when the spout is disconnected. The ignition is triggering completely independent of any input from the ECU at that point.

Ok so were digging way deeper into this now, because that's all I had left, Its gotta be a ground we've overlooked or from what I know the eec relay because this car now has 10 to 15 people stumped over the past month Im getting people just giving up after I've told them everything has been done and we just can't get the timing to come down before 30 without a stalling engine

Double check the cam grind number to be sure you got one with an HO firing order.

You have the wires on the cap right? May be firing wrong to #1 cylinder.

And x2 on a balancer, even new it can happen.

Have you tried a different timing light?

Are you doing this with a warm or cold engine? Is it stalling due to low idle rpm? Or spit and pop like retarded timing?

The cam is a letter b cam its the h.o firing order wires are on correctly, used 2 guns one with a led and screen to show rpms, its always on cold start because the car hasn't been running for more than 2 minutes the past month now, replacing the EEC and even the computer Friday

Timing adjustments are to be made to warm engines.

Will go ahead and add another brand new balancer to the list and can't get a engine warm if the car won't run for more than 2 minutes, if something is wrong were not going to force the car to run to get it warm

Can you not let it warm up without the spout? Mine ran without a spout for a long time (unbeknownst to me).
