  • Steam cleaned pistons?

I'm losing coolant, slowly, in the 94 GT. Its not going on the ground, and from what I can tell at least, it doesn't seem to be in the oil. With a car with 178k on the odometer, I'm assuming a head gasket finally gave up the ghost. Could I still have a head gasket leak, and not really see any coolant on the dipstick?

If it was a slow enough leak perhaps this could happen? I have one of those cylinder cameras, and I'm going to check to see if any piston has the been steam cleaned by the leak. But I was hoping maybe someone here, just might have an alternate explanation.

The low coolant light comes on about every 1500 miles. However the car rarely gets driven. Mostly it just sits in the garage. When the low coolant light finally comes on, the radiator is always still full. But the overfill jug will be below the fill line, almost empty. Once I fill it back to the fill line, the low coolant light goes off.

Just keep adding coolant. Why are you doing all these things to such a high mileage motor?

Check the plugs. They'll show similar "clean" and will likely be rusty ont He bad hole.

You've got a good point, and I really don't have much of an explanation other than "I like a challenge". Old engine can teach me a thing or two, compared to most that post here I'm a mid level mechanic at best. I've already started gathering up the parts for a replacement, but dammit I don't want this old engine to beat me. It would always bother me that I never had it running right. The wife sold a 2001 volvo S80 back in 2008, that had a bad miss and it still bothers me that I never got to fix it. Maybe I'm weird.

I'm the only one here that likes working on old shit, as opposed to starting with brand new? So you guys would just scrap the high mileage engine? Well I can't argue with your reasons.

Either rebuild the engine or you'll end up chasing your tail. I hate working on old, dirty, nasty shit. I love old cars, but the components are new and clean.

I have a feeling that no matter what I post, you'd say it wasn't worth it lol. That said, is any 94 GT worth it? Hell they all could be worth it, after a paint job and an interior redo. Provided no wrecks of course, or cosmetic only.

Its just an opal frost GT with black interior, with the 90's era tri star ponies. Nothing special by any stretch. Unless, like me, you love the bodystyle.

lol, I'd edit out the plates. We've all seen how badly not doing so can go, around here.

Well I do understand not wanting to work on old dirty nasty shit, hell I'm the same way. But in my defense (of keeping this engine) its pretty clean. I've cleaned it up pretty well in the past, its just a little dusty now but that's about it. No fluid leaks of any kind, onto the outside anyway. Apparently inside the engine is another matter.
