  • Best shop for 289 stock rebuild

I work with an older lady that bought her bucket list car, a red 66 coupe with the stock 289 which gave her problems after running fine at first. She said the car just shut off going down the highway. After getting it home and pulling spark plugs one plug was broken off and they assume the broken tip could be what is now keeping the engine from turning over. She wants to save the block because its numbers matching and wants just a stock rebuild because the car is intended to be a daily driver since it has A/C.
So, she doesn't really need a Morgan and Sons stroker here but they are probably the best ones around I can think of for any engine work. But she is looking for a good shop somewhere closer to Lake Worth because the car will have to be taken there since she wants a turn key rebuild.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

I had good luck with Layne's machine shop in Springtown.

Thanks slowbrick. I'll tell her to check them out. By the way the guy with the good old 514 is running mid 11's in my old Galaxie down in New Zealand.

I second Arlington Machine. My daughter and are are currently assembling a block we had just got back from machining by AM. Unfortunately, they do not assemble the blocks. Eddie wants it brought up in pieces, he will do his thing, get you all the supplies to make it a long block and return it to you for assembly. May not be an option for you.

I have had nothing but good experiences from Wayne Calvert in Denton.

Thanks for all the input! She is going to check them out because she just wants to have a car she can drive.

BTW, There was no such thing as numbers matching until 68 for Ford Mustangs.

The VIN on the engine started in 68 so if the block is hosed tell her to not worry about it. Just need a 66 289 block which is pretty easy to find.

Wayne Calvert's is the best for engine machine work but they only do the engine work. You have to pull and install.

Good to know, thanks. I was wondering about that. She may have been going off of what the previous owner said.
