So, I bought a 1987 Suburban 4x4. One owner and 55k miles. Great clean truck and is now my daily. I am working on a plan to give it a little more power and get rid of the TBI setup.
I have acquired a Holley Multipoint fuel injection manifold, I just need to buy the wiring harness and computer.
My question is what are the main differences between the pre 87 SBC's and the 87+ TBI? I am finding that the center bolts on the intake manifold are drilled at a different angle (the intake I have looks to have ability to do both), different valve cover bolt arrangement and 87+ has one piece rear main.
I am thinking of getting one of the edelbrock "packages" with heads and a cam, some cheap ol' summit headers and re-use all my factory accessories and bolt right back up to the 700r4 which will receive a Monster upgrade DIY rebuild kit...and maybe a converter.
Can I just bolt on the Pre 87 heads, my holley intake and then go to town? Am I missing something with the distributor or will I need a specific Dizzy for the Holley EFI?
I could probably leave all of this alone and just install the EFI setup on the current motor but the valve stem seals are 27 years old and so is every other piece of rubber in the motor. It gets a heavy oil smell on cold start up but does not smoke otherwise... Heck, I have even been looking at those 290/330 GM crate motors for pre 87 stuff, just want to make sure I don't have compatibility issues with accessories and transmission crap.
Thanks!
