  • Alternator pully getting hot.

Put a new remanufactured alternator on it from O'reilly's. Car runs fine but the pully is getting hot enough to start melting the belt. Could it be a bad part, I've heard of people getting these and they don't work correctly. Spins freely by hand with the belt off. 86 gt, stock alt.

    How tight is your belt?

    Take the alternator back.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

Ya, definitely take it back. Maybe a bad bearing?

The alternator itself is not getting hot. Battery voltage 12.6 and 14.4 with the car running.

Sounds like the pully on the alternator is not spinning. Or wrong size pulley?

Could the pulley be spinning on the shaft?

I'm thinking it might have a little too much drag, causing it to slip just on that pulley. More friction.

I think the pulley is too small the belt was touching itself under the tensioner pulley

I put on my old belt that I knew wasn't going to touch in that spot. It was maybe 1/2 and inch from itself, took it for a short drive and its almost touching again. Pulley not as hot though. That friction was causing the alt pull to get hot

Is everything factory on the car, or does it have smog removed, underdrive pulley's, etc?

Smog removed. I think I just need a shorter belt meow.

It requires a different belt, but you can route the belt from the alternator to around the crank first then the water pump and it won't touch itself anymore.
