  • 93 GT Starter question

My 93 GT hasn't wanted to start as of yesterday. Last week, when I would go turn the vehicle on, I would just get a single click coming for the fender starter solenoid. Id try to turn it on again and the same thing would happen. I would wait a couple minutes and the car would fire up.

Well now, it seems to have finally gone out as of last night. So I replaced the fender starter solenoid, thinking it was bad but it did it again and didn't want to start. I replaced the ignition switch and again, it would just make one click on the starter solenoid and didn't want to start. Im getting juice to everything on the vehicle and lights are bright. Both battery and upgraded 3g alternator are fairly still new. I went ahead and checked the battery but that is still good.

So now, I have yet to replace the starter. Being that it is a high torque mini starter, my question is how often does the solenoid on the starter go bad? I say this because Oreilly's sells the solenoid on the starter separate rather than paying for the whole starter + solenoid as one?

They are likely referring to the solenoid on the fender, and not the starter itself. You don't get the option to just buy the starter solenoid on most vehicles that were made after the 70's.

Well you are able to purchase the solenoid separate. Even latemodelrestoration sells the PA solenoid that fits all mini high torque starters.

I can't tell if you are asking us a question or if you have already answered your question.

Yes, they will go bad on occasion but not very often. Replace just the solenoid if you can, preferably with an OEM part. I've never been impressed with aftermarket solenoids.

Sounds like a bad or corroded ground. Check your grounds at the battery.

With a mini-starter you don't need the fender mounted solenoid since it has it's own, just f.y.i. You run the signal wire from the switch directly to the starter.

Ignition switch/connector might be the problem.

Agreed. The cable / grounds are the most likely culprit.

The problem was the starter. I ordered the new one from latemodelresto, installed it, and it worked. I even ordered and replaced the old harness with a new one. So if anyone needs one, let me know. Also have the old starter. My guess is that u can probably gamble on changing the solenoid on the starter and see if it works rather than paying for a whole new one. Only reason why I bought a whole new one was because I'm replacing a lot of the old parts with new. So if anyone would like that, let me know.
