  • tuning carb and timing engine

Ok so I was able to get the car timed where I think it should be. Before it was at like 26+ degrees advanced. The timing tab on this old 283 doesn't go.past 18 degrees. So I faniggled a few things and go her to idle and run at 10*.

The carb is a 1405 edelbrock. Viewing from the front, left (passenger side) vacuum port goes to the ac vents. Middle port goes to my pcv on passenger valve cover. And right (driver side) port goes to vacuum advance hei dizzy.

I took the carb off and gave it a cleaning. I found a vacuum leak on the old gasket, hence the reason I took it off. Replaced gasket. Buttoned all back up and got her running then timed. Sprayed all edges of the carb and intake with carb cleaner and found no leaks. Good. Now. I have the idle set at about 900. Vacuum gauge pulled a max of 12hg with the mix screws turned upward 1.75.

Problem areas are it crawls up to idle once stsrted. It feels sluggish when I rev it up. also, and most importantly, the dang rpms still drop substantially. Like down to about 4-500rpm.

    Help would be greatly appreciated.

Que? Anyone with a similar issue, plz share... I have all weekend to get it sorted out... hell it might get bad enough that I'll even pay someone in cash or beer to come over and tune this thing while showing me exactly what to do.

How did you adjust the a/f screws? Have you downloaded a tuning guide?

Started at 1/2 turns out. Hooked up my vacuum gauge and turned each screw outward in small increments until I achieved max hg.

Did you make sure the needles were seated properly when you re-assembled the carb? Sometimes those Edelbrocks are hard to put the top plate back on without getting the needles in a bind. Loosen the torx and slide the covers off tot he side and see if the needles move up and down freely. Also make sure you didn't bend one.
If they are stuck or out of place you will not be able to tune it.

Also, grime gets built up under the A/F needles. Take them all the way out and clean the passages with carb spray, clean the needles and reseat the them all the way in before starting tuning. I've fixed many Eddy carbs with this method.

I didn't disassemble her. Just cleaned her up. Was very grimy and brown... I'll go ahead and strip her double check the needles. I don't have a rebuild kit so I didn't take it apart. Didn't want to tear the top gasket. Otherwise I would have reset the floats.

Good call. I'll take off again and take off the screws then carb spray em along with compressed air.

About the severe drop in rpms when shifting to gear... does this indicate a vacuum leak somewhere? That's my main issue. The hard starting and such is probably due to a dirty carb. Idk where else to check for a vacuum leak if that is the culprit. I've sprayed all areas of the carb, vacuum lines, carb base, and intake. To no avail.

Doing the above I was able to find a good leak on the intake. It had a vacuum port with a frayed rubber cap. Replaced it and checked. No leak now.
