  • EFI swap vs carb

On my 66 Mustang I've been accumulating parts to do a fox style EFI swap on it. So far I've got intake, dist, fuel lines, rails, injectors, maf and harness. I still lack lots of little parts like sensors, fuel line adapters, a pump, bungs for O2 sensors, distributor gear and the like.

I'm at the point of almost jumping ship, selling all the EFI parts and going back carb. To do the EFI it would take me a couple days to get the harness modded, run mulitble lines and adapters, plumb everything, fab a shock tower brace, throttle linkage, mount everything, etc..

    Vs.

Carb intake would just slap on an intake and stab a distributor. The car is already set up for carb.

I've got a laundry list of shit to complete on my car and adding EFI is turning out to be a bigger undertaking that I had planned.

    Please voice your opinions.

    It looks coolish

I figured I should move the build thread over and update it, since I started it in Canada.... I found this 69 coupe on craigslist, looked at it and drove it home. Everything is factory stock, from the 302/c4 down to the floor mats and owners manual. The title was last issued in 1980, and I figure the car might actually have

FWIW, I've got lots of thoughts on the various options for EFI on a classic mustang.

My choice to go with a TBI style setup was made because it fits my style, and it is relatively easy to do. Once finished, it will be hiding under the factory air cleaner, and that was something I wanted. I planned on doing some subtle mods to the outside of the car, and interior is going to be mostly stock, too. I really wanted to build a car that would perform well, and look reasonably stock. Pop the hood and you'll see a sanden compressor, electric fan, and most everything else will have a stock appearance. Get to looking around, and you'll see things that are pretty unique.

You're car is a different animal though. The TBI style may also be a nice setup for you as well, but perhaps a spyder style would work well, and would fit under the stock hood and export braces without too much fuss. Dropping the coin on that EFI I posted above would be kick ass too.

For me, the factory fox stuff just didnt seem to be worth the time and headache to install. I have nearly all I would need upstairs collecting dust. Without a quarterhorse or something to tune it (another added expense) I was stuck with every problem we fought back when we were playing with fox five liter cars, except now everything is 10 years older.

I just pulled the carb off my car. I'm sure that someone that knew what they were doing with one could have made it run right, but I'm not that guy, and I threw a couple hundred at a guy to do that without results. To me, finding someone that could help with the tune on an aftermarket EFI was easier, as I know a few already. You may know carbs or a good carb guy, though.

Carbs are easy for me, figured EFI would look cool and run a little better. It's not a daily but even just cruising I hated smelling like gas everywhere.

I vote throw the carb back on it and drive it. I did the stock fox parts swap on a maverick and it took some time. By the end if it I should have just left it carb'd and drove it. It might just be that I'm tired of working on them and would rather be driving them.

I would do the efi. You have almost everything you need and the parts you don't are cheap.
