  • 99 Cummins VP44

Anybody know of a good place / price for a rebuilt VP44 injection pump? Mine is suffering from the notorious hard start problem so it is terminal.

Mine has been doing that for years. Keep a quart of tranny fluid in a full tank of fuel and a fresh starter and it will start like it did when new. I give it a shot of starting fluid when I forget to put the oil in the fuel. It is much worse when it is hot out. In the winter time it always starts instantly.

What kind of ATF are you running? I hear the friction modifiers in most of them could cause issues. I was running 2 Cycle, 1oz per gallon until a few months ago due to it being a pain and a mess to deal with.

2 cycle is strongly recommended over the Atf because of friction modifiers as you mentioned. Have you checked to see if it has any trouble codes in memory. If the lift pump has failed, it could cause some extended/long crank times.

Get on cumminsforum and get a used one someone upgraded. They are stupid high even for a used take off, that comes with a few drops of diesel.

They are around $1000 from several online shops. I'm not sure what Luke gets for them anymore, I know it's higher than that though. The hot rod VP44's I think are closer to $2000, but supposed to make and hold more power.

I understand what you are saying, but before I dropped $5-600 for a used unit with no warranty, I would buy a new one for @ grand and take the year warranty.

I run 2 Cycle sometimes and all it does is make the injectors a little quitter while supposedly lubricating the pump. However there is no Cetane value to make the truck start any quicker.

Startup is all on the VP44 and not the lift pump. The lift pump coming on actual creates longer starts by adding air into the injector pump if it is hurting from a bad diaphragm.

I haven't but a code reader on it but some folks don't even get the dreaded P0216 code and their pump is completely out.

Exactly. I was on craiglist and found a local guy parting out a 99' and he wanted $900 for the pump. This is as much as Thoroughbred Diesel wants for one with a one year warranty. I will take a chance and 2-3 hrs of my life for $200 used pump but that would be it.
