  • Need some R12 help

My 93 Lightning isn't cooling at idle like it use too. I hooked up the low side hose and get a reading of 40 with the compressor running non stop at 800 rpm. Ambient temp was 91 degrees. I want to check the high side but my high side port is too small for the hose to fit. I do have the correct R12 hose but it's just a shade too large and won't thread on. So what gives here?

    You need an adapter.

throw a new fan clutch on it

Have someone hose down the condenser with it idling, which will basically emulate what the fan clutch should be doing. If it starts cooling fine then look at the clutch as the problem. That and you probably need an adapter, welcome to 20 years ago! R-12 fittings were far from standardized.

I got the adapter, 1/4" to 3/16". I have a Mark VIII fan. Yesterday humidity was 100%, temp was 81 and the low side showed 35 with a high side of 150. It was cool at idle but not cold. I may try to add a few ounces and see what that does. The compressor stays running and does not cycle.

if you have a heater water diverter valve, check it for not closing all the way or leaking through.
